Our roof garden design for Princess Anne Hospital is now on show at the hospital’s main entrance.
Comprising information boards, a 3D printed model and video walkthrough, staff and visitors can now get a real feel for how this oasis of calm and respite will look.
Developed for Southampton Hospitals Charity and University Hospital Southampton NHS FT staff, the roof garden will be an opportunity to get away from work, grab a coffee, enjoy the garden or just gaze across the city. The roof garden design also offers a viewpoint with impressive views towards the Western docks.
Designed in close collaboration with the multi-disciplinary project team, it has been facilitated in part with the help of the online Spatial platform which brings the benefits of in-person collaboration to the virtual world. By designing within an immersive VR model, teams are more easily able to collaborate irrespective of their busy work schedules. The model is also helping to engage staff.
Due for completion late Spring/Summer 2023, this rooftop garden is supporting the hospital’s journey to decarbonising the University Hospital Southampton estate and achieving the challenging NET ZERO target set by the NHS, as detailed in its green plan. Sustainable features include a biodiverse green roof, rainwater capture with automated irrigation system and wildlife friendly planting. Collectively these measures help to purify the air, reduce ambient temperature, save energy and encourage biodiversity in the city.

Our Spatial model has also been entered into the Interior Design Magazine’s Metaverse Architecture + Design Awards – the first of its kind within the architecture and design industry. You can view the model by clicking this link.
