Strata Design worked with Southampton Hospitals Charity to create a staff roof garden at Princess Anne Hospital. We were delighted to be involved in a project actively supporting NHS staff wellbeing and to work on a project with such a positive impact.
The proposals presented an unusual opportunity to significantly enhance the availability and quality of amenity space for University Hospital Southampton staff. The implemented design also improves the visual quality of the immediate and wider campus context, enhances environmental quality and increases the amount of shelter, habitat and food sources for local wildlife.

The roof garden features a sociable covered seating area with refreshment kiosk and a more secluded area with verdant planting and integrated seating for quiet reflection. The space takes advantage of impressive views towards the Western Docks and River Test.
The roof surface is designed to function as a blue/green roof system. Through rainfall capture, storage and reuse in an automated irrigation system, planting resilience to drought events is significantly increased, reducing maintenance requirements and drinking water use by eliminating the need for frequent manual watering.
Multistem tree planting  offers nesting opportunities for birds, and food for a wide array of insects and birds. Plant species were selected for their nectar, food and habitat value to wildlife.
A 3d printed model informed the staff consultation.
The lighting proposals were carefully considered to maximise enjoyment of the garden and support 24 hour use. Warm temperature surface wash and down lights minimise adverse impacts on wildlife.
